About Random Note Project
Random Note Project exists under the firm belief that every single one of us has a message to share that can positively change the course of someone else’s life.
It started in the early 2000s when I, Gabrielle Bovard, was a lonely and awkward teenager. I felt so much pressure to figure out the exact right path for the whole rest of my life. It had to be amazing! I was looking everywhere for clues and signs to unlock my grand purpose. What I found were a lot of unhappy, confused, and questioning people just like me.
I was compelled to help. I wanted to say “SAME HERE!!!” and “It’s okay!!!” I wanted to take away all of the pressure and expose the truth that we’re all normal, we’re all going through the trials and triumphs of life, and we’re all definitely going to be okay. No one has to figure it out by age 18 or 30 or 62. Funny, so often we give the advice we need to hear the most.
However, I knew I couldn’t just approach strangers in the mall and expect to reach their hearts on a deep level with my words. I was awkward, remember? But, if they were looking for a sign as intently as I was, I could give them that! Thus, Random Note Project was born. Tearing scraps of paper and scrawling heartfelt encouraging messages on them, I began leaving notes wherever my gut told me a needing person would find them. Telephone poles, library books, park benches.
Soon enough, the notes were being found and stories were pouring into my inbox from people who found their perfect words at just the right time. I was blown away. As people were finding notes, they joined the project and started leaving notes as well. Within a short while, I was receiving submissions from countries around the globe—places I had never been and in languages I didn’t speak. Our story was being told in major media publications. Empathy, kindness, connection—it’s contagious. And we need it.
I started Random Note Project looking for where I fit in the world around me. What I found is that we all fit together. When we’re at our best, we have the power to give the right words at the right time to someone who needs it most. I want to give this gift to as many people as possible. Random Note Project is free and open to anyone with a positive message to share. Together, we can make the world a kinder, more connected place.
Many thanks to Adam Conkey who, upon finding a note, eventually tracked down its writer, started writing notes of his own, and published our very first website. Random Note Project would be impossible without him.
